Our first two summer interns have been with us for two weeks, and already they’re making quite a splash. These girls are quick learners and we are putting them to work! We asked them to write a little something about themselves to share with you.
Get to know Megan:
Hey all! My name is Megan and I have just started a summer internship with Green Light New Orleans! This is my first summer in New Orleans – it’s only June 1st and it’s already as hot as the hottest of days in my hometown of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota. As I’m getting used to the heat I’m also getting used to life in the Green Light office – taking applications, scheduling appointments, training volunteers, etc. It’s been a busy couple of weeks but I’ve enjoyed learning all about the organization and am thrilled to be spending my summer helping to make New Orleans a more energy efficient city!
In May I completed my third year of undergraduate study at Tulane University here in New Orleans. I am attempting a double major in Architecture and Sociology, both subjects that I find absolutely fascinating. Next semester I’m off to Rome to study architecture and, of course, eat as much pasta as possible!
My favorite thing so far about summer in New Orleans is probably all of the festivals constantly happening around the city. I love the festival atmosphere – all the people, the live music, the delicious food – you don’t get that every day in Minnesota. Some of my favorite festivals so far have been Strawberry Festival out in Ponchatoula and Bayou Boogaloo!
If I can stand this crazy weather I think it’s going to be a great summer!
Get to know Nicole:
Hi! I’m Nicole, one of Green Light’s six new interns for the summer. I only just got back to NOLA a few weeks ago from New York, where I go to Barnard on the Upper West Side during the school months (which means I jumped right from a tri-state winter into New Orleans heat). I’m studying both sociology and women’s studies at Barnard with the intention of getting into the sociological side of public health. My hopes for a summer internship, then, were to combine my need for experience in NGO operation, my love for my home community, and my passion for environmental activism. Having volunteered with them several times during my years at Sacred Heart, I knew Green Light was the right place to go. These first two weeks in the office have certainly proved successful in this respect…a whirlwind of getting to know how GLNO functions plus constant engagement with community members and local organizations.
Outside of my work with Green Light, I’ve spent most of the summer thus far just enjoying myself…lots of kayaking on the bayou, too much yoga (as if there ever could be too much yoga), crawfish boils, visits to Hollygrove Market, catching up with old home friends. I intend to spend the rest of these super-heated months doing much of the same with a few weekend camping jaunts thrown in – and of course fully absorbing and enjoying my experience here at Green Light.
Welcome, Megan and Nicole! And we can’t wait for the rest of the interns to arrive next week…stay tuned for more intern bios to come!
