On Saturday, July 20th, Green Light New Orleans will partner with the City of New Orleans and the New Orleans Fire Department during NOLA FOR LIFE Day in Gert Town. NOLA FOR LIFE is Mayor Landrieu’s comprehensive murder reduction strategy. The campaign focuses on five pillars to address the senseless violence that plagues New Orleans:
1. Stop the shootings
2. Invest in prevention
3. Promote jobs and opportunity
4. Get involved and rebuild neighborhoods
5. Improve the NOPD
The event in Gert Town will be the city’s fourth NOLA FOR LIFE Day focused on neighborhood revitalization, blight reduction, and public safety. Green Light will lead volunteers to install free energy efficient light bulbs in Gert Town homes and sign residents up for the New Orleans Fire Department’s free smoke detector program. Green Light partner Bayou Land RC&D will mark storm drains in the neighborhood.
Other activities taking place before, during, and after the event on the 20th include park and infrastructure improvements that will deter criminal behavior and remove nuisances. Activities will be centered around Norwood Thompson Playground at 7200 Forshey Street and the event will culminate with a celebration including food and music.
Mayor Landrieu invites all New Orleans residents to get involved in NOLA FOR LIFE, and volunteers are welcomed. Volunteer activities will last from 9am-1pm on Saturday, July 20th.
