Dear Backyard Gardener,
October is here and you’ll want to spend this month planting your winter vegetables as well as resowing your favorite fall roots and greens. Jim Mizell will be at the Crescent City Farmer’s Market in Uptown Square most Tuesdays from 9am-1pm with seedlings of many of the following plants and more, or you can pick up the seeds at 8203 Jeannette Street from the Greenlight New Orleans Free Seed Library and start your own seedlings! So, here is what we planted as seeds in the last few weeks and will soon be putting in our garden beds:
Kale Arugula
Broccoli Shelling Peas
Mizuna Radish
Beets Cilantro
Swiss Chard Cucumber
We also planted seeds of Onion and Carrot, but these didn’t come up well. We hope to see more success when we sow them directly in the ground rather than in the seedling pods.
Remember you can plant much more than this- essentially any salad green and root vegetable will withstand the cold.
Good luck! And remember to reach out with any questions at garden@greenlightneworleans.org
