Front of the Teaching Garden
Following the principles of the edible city concept developed in Andernach, Germany, the front section provides fresh, nutritious food free of charge to passersby and neighbors. Depending on the season you can find a variety of greens and herbs. We provide scissors and instructions on how to properly harvest in our Garden Library, a small structure located at the front of the garden. Back of the Teaching Garden
The food grown in the back section of the garden is reserved for Teaching Garden Members. The Green Light New Orleans Edible Teaching Garden provides an educational space for Green Light gardeners. We host “Intro to Organic Gardening” classes several times a month for households participating in Green Light’s Backyard Vegetable Garden program, and grow organic food in a beautiful permaculture-style setting. All the food
is grown without the use of herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers.
For $20/month you can come and harvest your own food, however often you like, during our “Open Garden” hours. Your contribution is essential to the care and maintenance of the garden. In addition, it helps us fund the care of the front section of the garden, ensuring all community members can access healthy food. Please check the list of currently available vegetables and herbs.
