On a quiet street in the lower 9th ward, Rita comes to the gate in front of her home to welcome two Green Light volunteers. A few neighborhood houses line the street, but it is clear that not all of them have residents living inside. Rita, however, is happily back in her home. She has lived in the same house for 45 years. Though she has no children of her own, her siblings, nieces, and nephews live in town, and she feels very connected to her life in New Orleans. During Katrina, water rose to the ceiling of this now repainted, sunny house. Rita looks around at the yellow walls. Though the rebuilding is not finished, she seems satisfied with the progress. As a participant of the EnviRenew program, Rita has worked with several different organizations to rebuild and weatherize her home. Green Light is just one of the providers, installing over 25 free energy efficient light bulbs. Rita listens with care as the volunteers explain the economic and environmental benefits of these bulbs, and thanks them eagerly as she leads them back out the gate.
