Join GLNO For Park(ing) Day This Friday!!
Hey everyone! My name is Rachel Brown and I’m one of Green Light’s new Social Media interns. I’m a Junior at Tulane University studying International Development and International Relations. I come from Hillsborough, NJ and love helping others through community service, and now by being a green weenie here at Greenlight!
Now that I’ve introduced myself, let me tell y’all about a really cool event going on this Friday called Park(ing) Day. Park(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event whose mission is “to challenge existing notions of public urban space and empower people to help redefine space to suit specific community needs.” The event was started in 2005 by San Francisco design studio, Rebar, when they utilized a two-hour metered parking space to create a temporary public park, complete with a tree, bench, and grass. The concept soon took off as people across the nation began to rethink the urban spaces in their communities, using metered parking spaces instead as public spaces for political protests, community outreach, free health clinics, art installations, and even a wedding! Today, Park(ing) Day has become a worldwide phenomenon, occurring in 183 cities, 30 countries, 6 continents, and now… New Orleans!
The event will take place this Friday in the following locations:
Spot 1: Perdido Street in front of City Hall
Spot 2: 3100 block of Magazine Street
Spot 3: Poydras Street at St. Charles Avenue
Spot 4: The Green Light District: 2100 Block of Magazine Street
Green Light New Orleans will be participating in the event by partnering with Green Serene, an eco-lifestyle boutique in the Green Light District. We’ll be stationed in Spot 4 in front of Green Serene at 2041 Magazine St., informing the public about our organization. So please, join us on Friday as we watch ordinary parking spots across our city temporarily transform into wonderful, creative public spaces.
