Annie Leonard Speaks at Tulane about “The Story of Stuff”

Hey y’all, its Rachel, and I wanted to let you know about this cool lecture going on Monday, October 3rd.  Tulane University is hosting author Annie Leonard to lecture about her acclaimed book, The Story of Stuff and discuss consumerism and its negative impact on our health and the health of our planet.  The lecture will take place from 8:00 to 9:30 pm at Dixon Hall and is completely free and open to the public.

Leonard has spent the last two decades researching and investigating health and environmental issues around the world.  She has travelled to 40 different countries touring hundreds of factories and garbage dumps to see the way our “stuff” is made and disposed of.  The Story of Stuff analyzes our “Materials Economy” that is, the system in which our stuff is extracted, produced, distributed, consumed, and disposed of.  Leonard argues that this system is inherently flawed and that it promotes our country’s out of control consumerism, which according to Leonard, is exploiting the economies of the developing world, ruining our health, and destroying our planet.  Don’t be discouraged though!  The book also describes how intervention in any step of the Materials Economy allows us to reclaim the system and our planet.

This topic’s in The Story of Stuff are so prevalent to GLNO’s mission because one of the easiest ways that you can reduce your consumption and help our planet is through simply switching to more energy efficient light bulbs!  So for all you green weenies, I would definitely recommend attending Annie Leonard’s lecture on Monday, reading her book, or watching her short film.
