A lovely but wet visit to the Johnson Elementary Garden
Yesterday, Gina, Sam, Jessica, and I (Camille) went to the Johnson Elementary School garden to have an information session for anyone in the Leonidas area who had questions about the upcoming Tip the Block Event. The garden was beautiful and surprisingly lush despite the summer heat. We felt very official as we set up all of our flyers on the table. Any professionalism was promptly ruined because it got very windy very quickly. Our first visitors helped us catch the whirling papers as they asked about the event. Some of the people were just coming to say hi and talk about how excited they were about the gardens they would get in July. Others hadn’t heard much about the event at all and so we went through the whole survey of services we offer. A lot of our visitors just wanted to be supportive because they were already trying different sustainability measures and wanted to see more happen in their neighborhood. There would be periodic lags in visitors so we took that time to explore the garden. Then, it started raining. Optimistically, instead of going to the car, we hid beneath an air conditioner window unit for cover thinking it would lighten up so we could go back to doing the info session. Eventually, we gave up and returned to the car. Just as we were about to leave, a woman dashed through the rain and knocked on the car window to ask for more information. Jessica hopped out of the car and both of them stood smiling in the rain as they went through the services and shared contact information. It was definitely a success and worth braving the rain.
