Evacuteer.org was formed in order to help fill crucial gaps identified after the first activation of City-Assisted Evacuation (CAE) for Hurricane Gustav in 2008. The City of New Orleans now authorizes Evacuteer.org to manage all volunteers who serve during CAE at 17 neighborhood pick-up points called Evacuspots, at the Union Passenger Terminal for transportation connections, and at City Hall to assist with 3-1-1 hotline operation.

Evacuteers are a very important part of New Orleans hurricane evacuation plan. City planners estimate that at least 35,000 people will need help evacuating before the next major storm. Evacuteers are a group of over 500 New Orleanians who are committed to evacuating the city safely and effectively by helping with city-assisted evacuation.
Evacuteers commit to serving a seven hour shift before leaving for their own evacuation. All Evacuteers will be released from service a full 24 hours before the storm reaches coastal Louisiana.

During a mandatory evacuation, each Evacuteer serves at one of three locations:

  • Pick-Up Points:  At 17 locations across New Orleans, Evacuteers register evacuees, tag evacuee baggage, provide evacuees with information, collect data on evacuee activity, relay information to emergency management officials, help load evacuees onto Regional Transit Authority (RTA) buses for transportation to Union Passenger Terminal.
  • Union Passenger Terminal:  Evacuteers escort citizens from RTA buses, coordinate transportation options out of the city for citizens, provide citizens with information and hydration, and assist citizens in boarding transports to regional sponsored shelters.
  • City Hall:  Evacuteers credential media, answer the emergency 311 hotline, and provide ad-hoc support to city, state, and federal emergency management officials.
