ELCA: A Successful Tip the Block Event!

On July 19th, 20th, and 21st, Green Light New Orleans partnered with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s annual youth gathering (ELCA) to host approximately 2,400 youth volunteers at Tip the Block projects around the city. This event built upon the already existing Tip the Block program, which aims to develop sustainable communities in New Orleans.
Each day of the event focused on a different Tip the Block area. The first was in the Dwyer Canal area in Gentilly, the second was in the Leonidas neighborhood in Riverbend, and the third was in the Hoffman Triangle area of Central City. Green Light New Orleans worked with a total of nine different partner organizations to bring their expert services to residents in these Tip the Block areas. We built backyard vegetable gardens, a community garden, installed rain barrels, cleared lots, painted neighborhood watch signs, cleaned and marked storm drains, installed light bulbs, canvassed neighborhoods, conducted trash pick up, maintained a community garden, and painted homes. Tip the Block brings together so many different types of services by utilizing the expertise of our partner organizations. Green Light coordinated the logistics of this event and served as the liaison to ELCA.
