Green Light Volunteer Organizes Art Fundraiser in New York City
Occasionally, we catch wind of the incredible things our volunteers are doing in their own communities, and we are always impressed by their creativity and ingenuity in advocating for social and environmental justice. Just this past week, Green Light received a letter from a volunteer named Madeleine who worked with Green Light this time last year with a group called Overland Summers. In the letter she describes her experience,
“After two days of volunteering we had helped around twenty people get new and energy efficient light bulbs. My group volunteered with many organizations, but Green Light New Orleans was definitely my favorite. I loved that I really got to see the impact these light bulbs had on people. Not only did we supply light bulbs to people who really needed them, but we were also helping to better the environment.”

Madeleine, a high school student from Brooklyn, New York, was inspired by her experience installing light bulbs and decided to take an extra step to help support Green Light’s mission. She and a friend worked all year to curate an art show and auction to raise money for Green Light. The show was a great success — they had eleven fellow students submit art, which they auctioned off on June 15th at 308 at 156, a gallery in New York City. Check out the flier for the event here. Madeleine was able to raise $350, which will help us buy more light bulbs to install in the community. We’re sorry we missed the fundraiser, but we are so grateful for Madeleine’s hard work!
It always gives us great pleasure to hear that the work that we do inspires the volunteers who work with us, especially when those volunteers take the initiative to engage their own communities when they return home. Whether a volunteer chooses to do something that directly relates to the work they did with Green Light New Orleans or whether the experience simply inspires them to continue volunteering in their own community, Green Light is proud to be part of a national network of people who care about giving back to their communities and fostering a culture of volunteerism.
Thank you, Madeleine, for inspiring us with your creativity, your hard work, and your enthusiasm for the issues that have inspired you.
