Magnolia School
Located in the historic White Hall Plantation along the Mississippi River, the Magnolia School is a private, non-profit organization that provides services and support to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The school was founded in 1935 after pediatrician, Dr. Charles Bloom’s wife gave birth to a child with developmental disabilities. Realizing the lack of educational opportunities for people living with disabilities, he created the Magnolia School.
Today the school offers a variety of services, including residential options in any of the schools 19 group homes. The group homes encourage residents to lead independent and fulfilling lives. The school also offers a number of recreational opportunities, including health and wellness activities, dances, and monthly parties. Additionally, the school provides adult day activities where individuals can learn new skills, receive employment training, and have fun.
In April 2011, Green Light New Orleans had the opportunity to further the Magnolia School’s mission. With the help of students from Benjamin Franklin High School, Green Light New Orleans installed 319 CFLs in the school’s main campus, as well as in the surrounding group homes, saving 125,686 kwh of electricity, 142,593 lbs of CO2, and $14,674. Now, the school can put the money that they had been spending on excess electricity towards furthering their objective to help adults with disabilities.
