New Orleans Curbside Recycling Program!
Green Light New Orleans will now be assisting signing up homes for New Orleans Curbside Recycling Program! Due to budget constraints, New Orleans has had a difficult time reinstating a public recycling service since Hurricane Katrina but we’re happy to see that free curbside recycling is finally back! Weekly collection began on May 2nd, and since then approximately 22% of New Orleans households have registered, with about 2% of New Orleans waste diverted from the landfill. City Hall is providing black recycling pick-up carts for free. However, customers are also able to place recyclable materials at the curb in the blue bins used before Hurricane Katrina.
Eligible addresses are buildings with four units or less, and not a restaurant, bar, or hotel. Curbside recycling will be available in all areas of the city, except the French Quarter and the Downtown Development District.
When placed curbside, recyclable materials do not need to be separated! Items to be accepted for curbside recycling include the following:
- Paper products (Examples: office paper, newspapers and color inserts, magazines, catalogs, junk mail and telephone books)
- Plastic containers coded #1 through #7 (Examples: water, soda, juice, detergent containers, etc., plastic pots from nurseries)
- Metals (Such as: aluminum, tin or steel cans)
- Cardboard (Examples: brown corrugated boxes used for moving or merchandise packaging)
- Boxboard (Examples: cereal, food, detergent, paper egg cartons)
- Waxed cartons (Examples: juice boxes and milk cartons)
