New Orleans Welcomes the Green Light District

Recently we came across an article in the Times-Picayune about a new “Green Light District” in the 2000 and 2100 blocks of Magazine St. The article featured stores that in some way use green materials in their products. The great thing is that these stores just so happened to all be located right near each other. Although right now it’s just a “Facebook page and an idea,” this newly and unplanned row of green shops has joined forces in hopes to make an official “Green Light District.”
The stores in the “Green Light District” include Spruce Eco-Studio, which sells environmentally friendly home design products. Branch Out and Green Serene are two clothing and accessories boutiques that work with sustainable resources. If you’re interested in accessories and home décor made from recycled Mardi Gras beads, then UP/Unique Products is a place to check out. Green Light New Orleans actually donates old light bulbs that we recover from houses to Mark Kirk and Heather Macfarlane, the owners of UP/Unique Products, to turn them into works of art. Zuka Baby sells all natural baby products, from cloth diapers to green teething products made of 100% natural rubber and food paint. Other eco-friendly stores around the area also give their input on the up and coming “Green Light District.”
