NOLA Youth Works – Our Final Team members and Our Event

We have been introducing you to members of our NOLA Youth Works team.  So far you have been introduced to Ivan and Nick.  The final two people we would like you to get to know are Micheal and Arian.

Here is a little bit about Micheal:

Hey, I’m Micheal Redmon. I stay downtown and I attend Edna Karr High School. I decided to participate in the Nola Youth Works Program so that I can earn money to help my mother out with school needs and bills. Also, I participated because I wanted to give to the community. By working at Green Light New Orleans I aim to get better at opening up to others that I don’t know. My ideal career is to become a parole officer. This job site will help me by giving me the opportunity to talk to other people without being shy and worried.

Now here is what Arian has to say:

My name is Arian Rhodes. I live in the east read neighborhood where it is peaceful. I go to Lake Area Early College High School where I’m graduating at also. I decided to participate in the Nola Youth Works program to learn things about doing the tasks on a job and meet new people. My goal while I’m working at Green Light New Orleans is to have an experience with being in an office, talking polite and being on time for a job. What I’m looking for my ideal career in the future is to be a physical therapist or an entrepreneur of owning a daycare. This experience is helping me because I have to know how to have a bigger vocabulary and speak calm.

This past week marked the end of their time working with us at Green Light.  We want to take a moment to thank Ivan, Nick, Micheal, and Arian for all of the work that they did.  Their help was greatly appreciated and it was wonderful to have them working with us, both in the community and in the office.

The event we had last Thursday, July 25th, was another successful collaboration with NOLA Youth Works.  For this event, local youth were canvassing for Green Light throughout the Broadmoor neighborhood to see if residents would be interested in participating in our free energy efficient light bulb program.  With the help of NOLA Youth Works we were able to find 10 houses that were eager to participate.  By the end of the day we had changed out 211 individual light bulbs. Over the lifetime of those new CFL bulbs 83,134 kWh of energy will be conserved, a total of $94,317 in utility costs saved, and 94,317 pounds of carbon dioxide will be prevented from being emitted into the atmosphere.

We at Green Light would especially like to thank Lanette and Summer who helped us to plan this event.  We would also like to acknowledge Khari, Caleb, Randy, Kiana, Chris, Vernisha, Duane, Rachel, and Joseph, all of whom are youth who came out to volunteer.  The day was a success and we are proud of the impact our partnership with NOLA Youth Works was able to make.
