The Results Are In… Outreach Tulane Makes the Grade!

On September 15, a group of 60 students from Outreach Tulane volunteered with Green Light New Orleans.
30 installed light bulbs as a part of Green Light’s free energy efficient light bulb program (Follow this link to learn more about the free light bulb program http://greenlightneworleans.org/index.html). We tallied up the data and their impact was huge! Due to their hard work, we helped local residents to reduce their energy consumption, lower their CO2 footprint, and save lots of money.
Impact from free energy efficient light bulbs installed by Outreach Tulane
Total number of CFLs installed: 506
CO2 reduction from the light bulbs: 226,182 lbs
Amount of money residents will save over the lifetime of these CFLs: $23,276
30 Outreach Tulane students also installed five backyard vegetable gardens for members of the Leonidas community as a part of Green Light’s Tip the Block program (Follow this link to learn more about the Tip the Block program http://greenlightneworleans.org/tiptheblock.html). Students worked in conjunction with Green Light’s partner organization, The New Orleans Food and Farm Network (http://www.noffn.org/), to build these gardens for interested residents in the Leonidas neighborhood. Thanks to their efforts, five families are now well on their way to becoming backyard vegetable growers, reducing their grocery bills, increasing their food security, and limiting the CO2 produced during food transportation.
We will provide periodic updates on these gardens so Outreach Tulane students can track the progress of the gardens they built.
