Urban Water Series

On April 26 and 27, the Greater New Orleans Foundation (GNOF) will host its next series of seminars on maintaining green infrastructure for a region. Entitled the “Urban Water Series,” GNOF held its first set of workshops in December of last year. The focus of this month’s lectures is stormwater management, a relevant topic during the spring season in the third rainiest city of the country.

Similar to the structure of the series held four months ago, there is a free public lecture and a technical masters class. The free lecture on April 26 from 5:30-7:30 pm will be led by architect Vince Micha, landscape architect Tom Mortensen, and civil engineer Paul McIlheran, a team of experts on stormwater management from Wisconsin. The three experts will present their work based on the “Nature Ignores Designs That Ignore Nature” philosophy. In other words, the lecture discusses how a community can design a stormwater management system that works with the environment rather than against it.

The second seminar on April 27 is a half-day master-class from 8:30-1:30 pm costing $45 ($30 for AIA, ASLA, and ASCE members). This price includes two meals and parking and continuing education credits can be earned for AIA, ASLA, and ASCE. Also hosted by Micha, Mortensen, and McIlheran, the three will cover their collaborative process for design projects as an architect, landscape architect, and civil engineer: three departments that often do not communicate enough.
