4 reasons it pays to be a Green Light New Orleans member
Green Light New Orleans is always seeking new members to support and help further our mission of developing a more sustainable future and demonstrating that a mass movement of individual actions can create a significant impact on our environment and community.
Please consider supporting this worthy cause. A donation of $10 per month helps support the work of Green Light New Orleans and is not without its perks:
1. You get to actively participate in and partner with one of the most successful sustainability programs in New Orleans.
Since getting started in 2006, our energy-efficient light bulb program has installed nearly 600,000 energy-efficient light bulbs in New Orleans residents’ homes, saving them $27.44 million on their electricity bills. That has also conserved more than 235 million kilowatt hours of electricity and reduced carbon emissions by more than 266 million pounds.
Sometimes pictures tell the story better than words, so check out these maps showing the impact of our light bulb-replacement program:

Each of those red dots represents a home that has received energy-efficient light bulbs since 2007. Our goal is to provide rain barrels to the community in the same way that we provided light bulbs. Subsidence, or the sinking of the ground, is a major threat to the city of New Orleans’ resiliency. Subsidence is caused in part by the city’s pumping of storm water during flood events. If residents are able to capture more water on their property, the city will not have to pump as much out during rain events. We believe that large-scale implementation of rain barrels could contribute to the lessening of subsidence’s effects.
Your membership helps us continue these vital efforts by ensuring that our programs have necessary funding and volunteers. We would not be able to do what we do without the support of the community!

2. Get access to the best of our seed library.
Green Light maintains a seed library that is open to the entire community, member or not. But Green Light members have access to a special library of open-pollinated seeds each planting season. Those seeds are reserved for our members and include everything from butter beans to cucumbers. And the free stuff doesn’t stop there. Green Light members can also access our surplus seedlings at various times throughout the year—such as after building and planting a vegetable garden.
3. Attend exclusive staff and member-only parties and events.
We’re passionate about sustainability and improving the lives of New Orleans residents, but we’re also passionate about community and—there’s no other way to say this—parties. We do live in New Orleans, after all. That’s why we like to have semiregular get-togethers with our members. These informal gatherings provide our members a chance to get to know the Green Light team and to meet like-minded New Orleans residents. We’ll provide the drinks and hors d’oeuvres, you provide your presence.

4. Get a limited edition wood-backed Green Light New Orleans journal.
For a $10/month commitment, new members get a unique journal etched with Green Light’s signature light bulb magnolia.
