Florida Alternative Break

We are excited (and proud!) to report that Green Light New Orleans’ mission has recently reached the eyes and ears of the University of Florida! The University of Florida has an ‘Alternative Break’ program (FAB) that offers the student’s of UF a chance to embark on week-long community service trips during academic breaks addressing different social issues to areas within the United States and internationally. This year, UF’s FAB program was looking to complete a service learning trip focused around issues of Alternative Energy and Sustainability and lucky for us, we are their next destination! The FAB members (total of 14 for this trip) hope to spend their Spring Break (March 3rd-10th) completing direct service for Green Light New Orleans, as well as increasing their knowledge around the issue of Alternative Energy and Sustainability.

Florida Alternative Breaks (FAB) is a student run service organization that is based in the Center for Leadership and Service in the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Florida. The University of Florida’s Center for Leadership and Service provides the structure and resources to prepare students to become productive citizens and assume roles of leadership and service in a culturally diverse and increasingly complex society. The office of Leadership and Service fosters lifelong service and civic participation by engaging the University with its greater community in action, change, and learning through education programs, student run organizations, and conferences. The CLS was founded on basic concepts of integration between leadership education and programs; community service and service learning; and community engagement.

UF’s Social Change Model of Leadership Development is specifically designed to enhance the development of leadership qualities in all participants.
