Green Light’s Edible City

Green Light’s Edible Teaching Garden, started in 2014, is a fruit and vegetable permaculture garden in the middle of the Hollygrove neighborhood. Mirroring the ideas of Andernach, Germany, the food grown in the front of the garden is open to all neighbors and passerbys. The food grown in the back section of the garden is reserved for Green Light gardeners and members.

In the front of the garden, we are currently growing a variety of greens and other winter vegetables. You’ll find kale, mustard greens, cabbage, brussel sprouts, jalapeños, bell peppers, and rosemary, as well as two trees: the curry tree and papaya tree. Check out the Current Harvest section of our blog to learn more about the vegetables we’re growing, how to harvest them, and how to prepare them.

The new harvesting library is located in the front of the garden. This harvesting library was made possible by multiple donations and volunteers. Bruce Presson, assisted by Megan Bayha, designed and constructed the library; Mia Rodriguez painted the signs; ACME Roofing Company and Lowe’s donated materials; and Louisiana Returned Peace Corps Association provided funding. Thank you to all who donated funds, materials, and time for this project.

In the library you’ll find tips on how to harvest, scissors for harvesting, and gardening books. The books are free for you to take home, but please return them so others can learn as well!
