Garden Resources and Tips
Hi Green Light Gardeners!
We hope you and your gardens are doing well. We’re reaching out to offer some tips for the heat.
As it gets hotter don’t forget that your garden will need water more than ever! The best time to water is in the early morning. Test how much you need to water by feeling the soil with your fingers to see how dry it is. An important part of keeping your soil moist is mulching, especially as it gets hotter! In our garden, we use found bags of leaves from curbsides. They are free and perfect to layer thickly over your whole garden and especially around the roots of plants.
While you are replanting this season, don’t forget to remediate your soil with some compost. If you don’t make your own, Schmelly’s Dirt Farm sells finished compost and garden soil and can deliver any quantity. You can also find Schmelly’s on Mondays from 4 to 7 at ReFresh Market outside Whole Foods on N Broad and at Hollygrove by appointment. To make an appointment email: nicola@schmellys.com or call/text 504-535-GROW
Here is a resource we have found helpful: the GNO Grower’s monthly newsletter. Check out the April 2017 pdf. You can also sign up to have this newsletter delivered to your inbox.
