Green Light Welcomes Two New Team Members from NOLA Youth Works

Last week Green Light welcomed Morrel Wilson and Dasia Weaver to the team. These two high school students are part of NOLA Youth Works, the city’s summer employment program for local youth. NOLA Youth Works focuses on creating a career-ready workforce by providing youth an opportunity to gain valuable experience and job skills that help them define and advance their career goals. Morrel and Dasia will be working 20 hours a week installing light bulbs, scheduling residents for installation, conducting outreach, and helping us prepare for the ELCA event at the end of the month. We asked them each to write a short blog to introduce themselves, including their future goals, why the decided to join NOLA Youth Works, and why they are interested in environmental work. Here is what they had to say:

My name is Morrel Wilson, your friendly knuckle headed Green Light worker. I chose to join the NOLA Youth Works job because I wanted to gain good work experience for the future. I live in New Orleans, Louisiana, Uptown in a peaceful neighborhood. I usually like to go outside and find new people to interact with; also I enjoy running. I enjoy drawing because I’ve been drawing my whole life and it is my talent. The thing I love the most is to hang with my friends. I want to one day work on architecting, painting, and drawing Manga. To accomplish these goals I plan to go to Art College for training or LSU. I enjoy working for a non-profit work place because I know that it is for a good cause. Helping the Earth and the people of it is an amazing experience that I would enjoy being a part of. I feel that we should protect this idea of saving our earth because we can’t just let something so great go to waste. I will continue to work hard and do my part, and I will never quit on any difficult task no matter what.

My name is Dasia Weaver. I am 17 years of age and I will be a senior in the fall for the next school year. I chose to participate in NOLA Youth Works because it is a great opportunity to have a job and to be a responsible young adult. This is not my first time participating in the program. Each year NOLA Youth Works provides youth with different job opportunities. That is the amazing thing about NOLA Youth Works.

I live in the Uptown area. My neighborhood is very peaceful. The things I like to do are hang out with my friends, I love to go shopping and also spend quality time with my family. One of the things that I like to do but don’t do very often is travel.

My career goal for the future is to be a successful stylist in the fashion industry. Another goal of mine is to get my bachelors degree. I plan on going to college. I have several in mind, including: Fashion Institute of design and Merchandising (FIDM), Nicholls State University, etc. FIDM is located in California and Nicholls is in Louisiana. I want to study fashion merchandising.

I enjoy working for an environmental non-profit, especially if it’s for a good cause. I do feel that the environment should be protected because we need our plants and animals and most importantly we need to survive in a clean environment. It is not healthy living in a dirty environment.
