March on Climate Change: Green Light Announces New Volunteer Campaign

Last week Green Light announced a new volunteer campaign called “March on Climate Change” to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions in New Orleans on a large scale. The goal of this campaign is to partner with hundreds of local volunteers to install 80,000 free CFLs in over 3,000 New Orleans residences — all by the end of this March. When completed, this campaign will offset a total of 35 million pounds of CO2 that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, and it will save New Orleans residents a total of approximately $3.6 million on their utility bills.

To make such an ambitious campaign possible, Green Light is seeking the support of local volunteers. Over 800 volunteers, or an estimated 12,000 total volunteer hours, will be necessary to meet this goal of installing energy efficient bulbs in over 3,000 households. Andreas Hoffman, Executive Director of Green Light, states,

“We have the free energy efficient light bulbs. We have hundreds of residents eager to participate. We are counting on volunteer support to answer this call to action that will dramatically reduce carbon emissions and save residents millions in energy costs.”

Green Light is also setting out to support the local economy by offering the first 500 individuals who volunteer two or more service days by the end of March a free gift card to a local business. Bernie January, Green Light’s Program Manager, explains,

“The gift cards are our way of saying ‘thanks’ to local volunteers helping to provide energy efficient opportunities for fellow residents. And now, those volunteers have the opportunity to go out and support businesses in New Orleans.”
