On September 20, 2012, Green Light New Orleans will be teaming up with AARP during its national conference in New Orleans to provide sustainable services to New Orleans residents through Green Light’s Tip the Block program. This wonderful opportunity is made possible through our partners at the New Orleans Food and Farm Network, NOLA Time Bank, and Bayou Land RC&D. Approximately 90 local residents in the Leonidas and Pontilly/Dwyer Canal neighborhoods will receive direct services that will improve their household energy efficiency, provide water mitigation for their property, or increase their fresh food access. AARP volunteers will be installing energy efficient light bulbs, working on a community garden, building 5 backyard vegetable gardens, providing neighborhood clean-up and lot clearing, and cleaning and marking over 100 storm drains! Street cleaning, storm drain cleaning and marking, and lot clearing to reduce blight will impact an additional 500 community members living in the Leonidas neighborhood. AARP volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about New Orleans communities first-hand and will get to take part in and learn about efforts to make New Orleans a greener city. Green Light New Orleans will track the volunteers’ work over the course of the day and update project maps with real time information about their impact.
